“When I was in college, it was during the war in Vietnam. At first they gave deferments to students, because there was a draft going on. Then after a while, they began to phase them out. But there was no way I was going to Vietnam. And I wasn’t going to run away to Canada or get a note from a psychiatrist saying I was crazy. So I looked at all my options, and one of them was to go into teaching, because they were giving deferments to teachers… so I got involved with that. I did that for four or five years. With four and five year olds, mostly. From that I learned how adults learn, and how I learn. You need to let yourself be ignorant for a while, and not give up when you’re frustrated. I also learned that kids are much easier to teach than adults.”
