Humans of New York #1

HONY — “When I was in college, it was during the war in Vietnam. At first they gave deferments to students, because there was a draft going on. Then after a while, they began to phase them out. But there was no way I was going to Vietnam. And I wasn’t going to run away to Canada or get a note from a psychiatrist saying I was crazy. So I looked at all my options, and one of them was to go into teaching, because they were giving deferments to teachers… so I got involved with that. I did that for four or five years. With four and five year olds, mostly. From that I learned how adults learn, and how I learn. You need to let yourself be ignorant for a while, and not give up when you’re frustrated. I also learned that kids are much easier to teach than adults.”

Allow me to introduce myself: my name is Hannah Chubb, and I am well aware that my last name is hilarious. I’m a curly-headed Canadian writer who straightens her hair every day before going out and chasing her dreams in New York City. I graduated from McGill University in Montreal, where I learned how to eat poutine and jaywalk, and am now pursuing a Masters in Journalism at New York University, even though purple is not my colour (yes, colour is spelled with a “u”, silly Americans). I write because it hurts not to, and if my words can touch anyone, anywhere, that’s all I can really ask for. I am inspired to get out of bed each day by the fear of being average, and I hope you do the same.
